What is Rally?
Rally obedience is a new version of the old, military-style obedience we've seen and done for decades. The old obedience requires your dog to perform without praise or encouragement, even though the hardest working, most dependable dogs in the world (seeing eye dogs and other service dogs, bomb and drug detection dogs and police and military dogs) work as a TEAM with their handlers and are encouraged and praised consistently and enthusiastically.
Designed after car rallies, where teams drive to a location to get directions to the next location, Rally is a fun and challenging activity to share with your dog. It's MUCH harder for the human than the dog, but it's a great workout for your dog's existing skills, plus we add lots of new ones. You and your dog Heel to each of 10-20 signs that form a course, and at each sign you perform the task (270 degree turn to the left, or serpentine right, through 4 cones, or over the jump, or front and finish, etc.) it indicates. The point is to finish the course with the fewest errors (tight leash, missing a sign, dog refusing to complete a task or owner telling the dog to do the wrong task!) and in the shortest amount of time.
This is a great way to help your dog work on Heel in lots of different circumstances. You'll learn to use your body and voice to guide and control your dog's forward motion and you'll practice moves actually used in AKC Rally competition. There will be some jumping and lots of stay and attention work.y
This class is for dogs that have a good grasp of Sit, Down, Stay, Come and some loose leash walking. Good prep for this class is practicing all of those skills plus a refresher of the Yo-Yo game. This class is very limited in size, so that everyone has plenty of time to run the courses. The first week will cover all of the signs and what they mean, as well as how to execute the task. All of the tasks are based on the 5 skills listed, above, we just expand on them and make them more challenging and more fun.
I hope you'll come and give this a try, maybe even go on to competing!
